Case  Study 2 – cable characteristics

FMA are experienced in using power distribution cables to support long distance power-line carrier communications.

 

In a recent contract, the characteristics of a 10km submarine cable was investigated using theoretical analysis to predict its attenuation performance for frequencies between 50 kHz and 1 MHz.

 

The advantages of using power-line carrier are long established and cost effective but have been limited by available transceivers, signal attenuation, signal to noise ratio and international standards.

The cable model was developed using MathCad®, where the physical dimensions of twin twisted screened and armoured cables were modelled together with the material properties.

From this model it was possible to predict dc and ac resistance, capacitance, inductance (mutual and self) at high frequencies.

 

The model showed good correlation between predictions and empirical results, compared with classical techniques of TDR and inductance/capacitance which gives predictions that are 30% less favourable.

Other cables of varying lengths and conductor cross sectional area have been tested and found to have good correlation with the model.

 

An additional contract was placed to design and build cable emulator units for factory acceptance testing.
